To the editor:
We feel it is important to clarify a couple of points raised in Mike Miner's Hot Type column of June 17.
First, while the Chicago Reporter has experienced funding challenges in recent years, so have nearly all of our city's hundreds of nonprofit organizations. In reality, this year's budget increased roughly four percent over the previous year's, thanks largely to continued support from a significant number of individual donors, the city's major foundations, and the Community Renewal Society, our parent organization.
Second, we consider issues of race and poverty just as topical as they were nearly 33 years ago, when the Reporter was founded. They may be viewed by many as unpopular, uncomfortable topics. But we feel strongly that virtually every major issue in Chicago is affected by these issues, and that it remains important to explore them through high-quality, in-depth, and investigative reporting. Supporting such journalism remains central to the mission of the Community Renewal Society.
