The Revolutionary

The apotheosis of the late-60s youth film, this 1970 effort by Paul Williams stars Jon Voight as an increasingly militant bourgeois dropout. Though Voight is marvelous, conveying a puzzling mixture of intelligence and bumbling stupidity, the film leaves just about everything undefined (the sources of Voight's activism, the details of his odyssey from militant to murderer, the motivations of his comrades, the sense of milieu). The American locale grafted onto the British shooting sites intensifies the dramatic disorientation. With Seymour Cassel and Robert Duvall. PG, 100 min.
