The Ritz Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through April 1 2012

Nobody plays it straight in Terrence McNally's 1975 farce about Gaetano Proclo, a straight businessman hiding out from his murderous brother-in-law in a gay bathhouse. Hoping to lay low, Gaetano instead encounters an aggressive chubby chaser (played by the delightfully crazed John Cardone) and Googie Gomez, a so-bad-she's-good chanteuse who thinks Gaetano is a producer about to give her her big break. After all, the Divine Miss M got her start in a bathhouse, didn't she? McNally's period references feel dated and the bathhouse's carefree sexual activity is hard to relate to in today's post-AIDS world. But the humor shines through in wild-goose chases and well-choreographed go-go dance numbers. —Marissa Oberlander
