The Rock and the Ripe Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through June 17 2012

In this surreal drama about the recent rash of suicides among bullied LGBT youth, the afterlife looks a lot like high school—which must mean there's no such thing as heaven. Five gay kids—a transgender thug, a self-hating bully, a model, a mute, and a princess in a tiara—find themselves in a purgatorial anteroom where they're waiting, they think, to see the principal. When newcomer Billy arrives, they greet him with taunting chants, chaotic group tantrums, and a dance number or two. Things get a lot clearer once we realize they're dead. Any show detailing the sort of torture that could drive a 14-year-old to take his own life is bound to be wrenching; writer-director Mark Blane makes the mistake of offering self-conscious artifice when the truth would suffice. —Zac Thompson
