The Rover Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 18 2012

The performing space is so small that you might feel like an extra in this 20% Theatre Company production of Aphra Behn's 1677 comedy about rakes a-whoring in Naples. That's both good and bad. On the one hand, the frequent sword fights take on a thrilling urgency. One misplaced thrust and . . . But the proximity also makes it hard to ignore Behn's loose, wandering, and inefficient storytelling techniques. You find yourself anticipating every plot twist. Jessie Mutz's cast perform too loudly and broadly for such an intimate venue, frequently playing to a nonexistent upper upper balcony when they're so close that we can examine the stitches in the fine costumes designed by Clare Kemock. The result is a messy, noisy production that, oddly enough, feels true to the Cavalier spirit of Behn's world. —Jack Helbig
