The Ruby Sunrise The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 24 2012

In a makeshift lab on her aunt's farm, amateur engineer Ruby dreams of building a radio for pictures. In her imagination, the machine will be the world's great uniter, ending misunderstanding—not to mention war. It's a long way from her workshop in 1927 to the writers' room where her daughter Lulu toils away on a TV show running at the height of the 1950s red scare. An entrepreneurial spirit and hopeless naivete unite the two generations of women in Rinne Groff's period dramedy. Directed by Charlie McGrath, this Proud Kate Theater Project production sparks here and there. But some questionable casting and an undercurrent of anemia prevent Groff's unconventional structure from gelling. —Dan Jakes
