The Sanity of Byron Constantin The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays. Continues through June 24 2010

"The obstacle to discovery is not ignorance," declares a spectral character in Matt Marcum's surreal show. "It is the illusion of knowledge." Sanity's own obstacles to discovery, however, are distant, cerebral characters and nebulous dialogue. After getting poked and prodded by a menacing doctor and nurse, we meet Byron (Ken Brown), who's just awakened from a six-year coma to find himself in an insane asylum. He has conversations with suspicious characters real and imaginary, including an evil jester and a sex-crazed nun, as he struggles to find the boundaries between life and death. Though Brown infuses his final monologue with nightmarish rage, he can't redeem the piece--which, like one of Byron's figments, turns out to be an "amalgamation of vague." --Marissa Oberlander
