The Santa Stories: The Nice One The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Sundays. Continues through Dec. 18 2011

While the "naughty" version of The Santa Stories goes delirious with cursing and gross outs, this family-friendly "nice" take on the making of Santa is well-rounded and pleasant. Many of the awkward hiccups that hurt pH Productions's adult show are resolved simply because you can't say "motherfucker" and grab a boob in front of nine-year-olds. The villains, in particular, are characters rather than sex fantasies here; they exude a sense of comic evil that has more quirk than kitsch about it. The environmentally conscious narrative isn't much changed, but it moves better. Even the Christmas tunes are appropriate (I mean, as appropriate as Christmas tunes get). A slow-mo climax pitting Santa, his elvish parents, and Claws the polar bear against the villains is the absolute highlight of both shows. —Kevin Warwick
