The Scar

This 1995 British film by the Amber Collective begins with the rough, sometimes uncontrolled feel of a documentary, which helps make the characters' decimated lives seem utterly believable. May worked as a union activist during the coal miners' strike of the mid-80s; her estranged husband is now a drunken ex-miner and her two children don't know where to turn. When she falls in love with a man whose company plans to redevelop former mine sites, her old ideals conflict with his career and the relative comfort it brings them. The film gives a good sense of the characters' denied futures, but the scenes between the lovers veer toward conventional melodrama. On the same program, Sara Sugarman's Anthrakitis, a visually cluttered and annoyingly mannered film about an unusual old woman.
