The Scarecrow Lover

Most contemporary Iranian films that have screened in the States have been set in the present—understandable given that country's tumultuous recent history. One exception is this latest work by veteran writer-director Mahdi Nourbakhsh, which is set in the 1940s during a rural uprising. When a wounded fugitive from the local military seeks refuge with a farmer, he quickly adjusts to the slower cadences of agrarian life. Soon he's helping out with chores and spending time with the farmer's peculiar yet charming daughter, who refers to him as her scarecrow. Nourbakhsh has crafted a tense, engaging drama interspersed with comic moments that provide brief respite from the impending tragedy. With Mahmud Pakneyat and Yekta Naser. In Farsi with subtitles. 110 min.
