The Second City's Neighborhood Tour The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays, Sundays. Continues through Oct. 30 2011

Inasmuch as it was raining heavily on the day I took this would-be walking tour of Second City's Old Town neighborhood, we mostly just rode the escalators at Pipers Alley--pausing on landings so our guide, Margaret Hicks, could tell stories about the legendary comedy theater's famous alumni. I gather that on sunny days you can actually visit the bar where George Wendt used to hang out instead of just having it described for you. Hicks is engaging and knowledgeable, but she undermines her opening gambit about how Chicago requires no validation from New York or LA by focusing almost exclusively on Second Citizens who became famous on the coasts. Unless you're a true comedy nerd, stick to the Chicago River architecture tour. --Zac Thompson
