The Seed

In this mystical drama by Brooklyn filmmaker Joshua Bee Alafia, a homeless orphan in Ethiopia is given the power of prophecy by an angel and rewards various kindhearted adults with predictions of marriage and talented offspring. Some of the ensuing love stories suffer from underdeveloped characters and weak acting, not least from Alafia as an alcoholic Canadian seeking an Ethiopian bride. Christian redemption and Africa's AIDS pandemic are serious undercurrents in a screenplay that simplistically promotes monogamy and procreation as societal cure-alls. In English and subtitled Amharic and French. 104 min.
