The Servant

After more than a decade directing B movies, Joseph Losey graduated to art films with this 1963 feature, the first of many collaborations with Harold Pinter. Dirk Bogarde is the sinister manservant who slowly corrupts his effete employer, James Fox. The film is very studied and smooth, even though it deals in sexual hysteria; it could use some of the roughness and drive of Losey's early work. With Sarah Miles and Patrick Magee.
