The Seven-Per-Cent Solution

An overacted adaptation of Nicholas Meyer's underplotted best-seller, with Sigmund Freud (Alan Arkin) curing Sherlock Holmes (Nicol Williamson) of his cocaine addiction. Following the novel almost scene for scene, Herbert Ross's film breaks awkwardly in the middle, and never finds much momentum before the last half hour. Holmes's deductions seem a little too elementary (he figures Freud is Jewish when he spots a menorah on his desk), while the name-heavy cast (Vanessa Redgrave, Robert Duvall, Laurence Olivier, Joel Grey) attacks the scenery with ravenous passion.
