Things just happen to Quoyle (Kevin Spacey)—a character who gives the word passive new meaning—until a tragedy that's a blessing in disguise leads him to the coast of Newfoundland, his family's ancestral home. There he learns family secrets—some shameful, some too cliched to be shameful—and shows moxie as a reporter for the local paper. This atmosphere-heavy drama, with its comfortably quirky characters, elegant performances, and ever shifting tone, is so innocuous it's not worth panning. Lasse Hallstrom directed a screenplay by Robert Nelson Jacobs, based on a novel by E. Annie Proulx. 120 min.
