This energetic hour-long show by the House Theatre of Chicago and Emerald City Theatre Company combines inventive theatricality with an entertaining, unpretentious approach to children's theater. House resident playwright Phillip C. Klapperich creates a new story for Goethe's characters, including the relentless broom, made famous by Disney: a plucky apprentice sets off in search of his master's magic orb, stolen by the sorcerer's evil-genius brother. The plot is straightforward enough to appeal to young audiences yet twisty enough to pull in grown-ups, and the script is packed with interesting characters--a feisty princess, a talking horse, pseudo-intellectual trolls--and witty pop-cult references. The staging, by House founding member Dennis Watkins, is full of playful theater tricks but may be a bit scary for preschoolers. Through 5/15: Sat-Sun 1 PM. Fri 4/29 and 5/6, 10:15 AM. Apollo Theater, 2540 N. Lincoln, 773-935-6100. $9-$12.
