The Sound of Music | Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The Sound of Music Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 23 2011

Rogers & Hammerstein's highly fictionalized 1959 musical account of the Trapp Family Singers is often produced, but Rachel Rockwell's spirited, exceptionally well-cast and directed revival makes it feel brand new. Each character is perfectly realized, down to the most minor walk-on. Even more impressive is the ability of leads Jennifer Blood and Larry Adams to take roles closely associated with show-biz dynamos like Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and make them their own. Sure, songs like "Do-re-mi" and "My Favorite Things" sound amazing, but even high-school productions can make this remarkable score soar. The rare and wonderful thing about this production is what it reveals of the nuanced book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. —Jack Helbig
