The Sound of Rio: Brasileirinho

Mika Kaurismaki directed this casual yet infectious 2005 love letter to choro, a Brazilian music that dates back to the early 1800s and often draws comparisons to American jazz for its improvised instrumental thrust. Various talking heads discuss the form in fits and starts, but what ultimately conveys choro's true essence is the abundant performance footage. Kaurismaki builds the documentary around a star-studded concert by the Trio Madeira Brasil, which allows him to capture both veterans like Zeze Gonzaga and Elza Soares and newcomers like Teresa Cristina and Yamandu Costa. In English and subtitled Portuguese. 90 min.
