The Southerner

92 minutes

Jean Renoir's 1945 examination of dirt farmers in the American south is probably his finest Hollywood film, which is to say a masterpiece. There isn't much of a story, but the film has a sense of people and place that gives it a tremendous weight and authenticity. The visuals seem sunbaked, blistering. With Zachary Scott, Betty Field, and Beulah Bondi; photographed by Lucien Andriot.
