The Spirit of the House

This 2000 video documentary by Weimin Zhang profiles Chinese artisan Shao Fang Sheng, who immigrated to the U.S. with her husband in the late 1940s to apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright. Looking young at 82, Sheng dispenses bits of family history and advice on life and food while giving a tour of her sprawling house on the Ohio River, which she and her late husband built over four decades. Yet Zhang, making her first documentary, is so adoring and possessive toward her subject, whom she calls “godmother,” that she allows only a cursory mention of Sheng's adopted son. 42 min.
