The Spitfire Grill The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 14 2012

When newly released convict Percy relocates to a small Wisconsin town, the sheriff—who's also, somehow, her parole officer—meets her at the bus station. He decides she'll work for bitter old Hannah in the local diner, and the allegedly tough-as-nails Hannah goes along. Hannah is bitter because her son went MIA during the Vietnam War, and that's also what caused the entire town to fall into disrepair. These early scenes establish a standard of implausibility from which James Valcq and Fred Alley's cliched, melodically challenged musical stage version of a 1996 film rarely recovers. Director Anna Hammonds and her laudable cast do an adequate job with inadequate material in a seemingly budgetless Bohemian Theatre Ensemble production. —Justin Hayford
