Downtown Evanston wine bar/bistro with ambitious kitchen; also sells wine retail.
High ceilings and a wall of windows make for a wide-open dining room at this contemporary American restaurant, recipient of a coveted Wine Spectator award for excellence. The menu has a thick French accent: theres a selection of house patés, and escargots baked in phyllo dough with goat cheese, asparagus, and a sweet butter sauce. Artichokes are stuffed with portobellos and Gorgonzola, then baked and served with a lemon-caper brown butter. Grilled duck breast is served with a cassoulet of duck confit. Wines are reasonably priced and offered by the glass or bottle or in flights within categories like "unique world whites," "Australian reds," and "great German estates." Many bottles are available for retail sale.
