The Sticky Forest, Part 1 The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 16 2010

This free adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale--about a young witch who wins the heart of a king and then turns on his children--is performed on a simple set, with a minimum of props and costume changes. Still, the essence of the story comes through charmingly. It helps that the small, energetic ensemble of adult and child actors evoke the imagination-filled roots of the Chicago storefront movement, using techniques reminiscent of Paul Sills's story theater--and that Stella Barrett, the fourth-grader who plays the witch, has such a strong stage presence. --Jack Helbig
