The Strange Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 6 2014

Jenny Magnus's 1998 play is aptly named. In the first scene a miserably drunk middle-aged woman barges into a young girl's bedroom in the middle of the night, wets herself, then proceeds to unload a lifetime's worth of resentment, disappointment, and spite on the child. They meet twice more, years apart, in the same bedroom in the wee hours. Magnus makes only a token effort to make the setup plausible, instead suspending this shadowy world in a lyrical middle-of-the-night strangeness. The Ruckus's sturdy revival of the 1998 work is aptly gritty and muscular, digging deeper into the psychological terror than Magnus's original production for Rhino fest. But director Allison Shoemaker gives the strangeness short shrift, playing things so straight that the implausibility becomes a liability rather than an asset. —Justin Hayford
