The Sum of Us Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 7 2009

Cheerful and tenderhearted, David Stevens's Aussie play about a widowed father and the openly gay son he wholeheartedly supports must have seemed like a breath of fresh air in 1990, compared to all the AIDS plays and standard-issue coming-out dramas. Today, its lack of dramatic tension tends to make it drag. Still, this inaugural offering from 1027 Productions, directed by Robert Estrin, maintains an unfussy air of pleasant intimacy. Michael Graham delivers a quietly masterful performance as the father, a middle-aged man who wouldn't mind another shot at love himself, and Joel Gross captures the son's puppyish romantic enthusiasms--as well as his exasperation with dad's seemingly unintentional cock-blocking antics. --Kerry Reid
