The Super-8 World of Bill Stamets

Journalist and photographer Bill Stamets is also a Super-8 filmmaker whose best work offers witty insights into the current fascination with seeing and being seen. Three of the seven films and excerpts on this program show political campaigns. Jesse Jackson's persona seems calculated for the camera as he works a crowd in Iowa and Its Presidents (1988). One especially telling image in Presidential Appearances (1992), a 12-minute distillation of the '92 campaign, shows a vice presidential debate poster behind a rotating doughnut-shop sign. Camera Notes (1985) is a personal meditation that includes excerpts from an interview with filmmaker Stan Brakhage and shots from Stamets's window. 74 min.
