The Swordswomen of San Gimignano Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 21 2011

Buried deep under On the Spot Theatre Company's assemblage of subplots, there is a passable children's show about two young women posing as men to compete in a Renaissance Italian dueling competition. Some of the physical comedy and the promotion of female empowerment may be suitable for families, but the production's needless two- and-a-half-hour running time and convoluted dialogue is tailored for no one. Mike Brayndick, who does triple duty as playwright, director, and scenic designer, clutters the stage both visually and thematically—the fact that exposition continues into the last scene suggests the need for serious cuts. —Dan Jakes
