The Tempest Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 19 2011

Shakespeare's valedictory play is a great candidate for promenade staging because it's got lots of things happening in a variety of spots all over a magical island. Given the right environment, a director can create a sense of exploration and surprise as he leads an audience—physically—from incident to incident and location to location. Dreamlogic Theatreworks has got the right environment: a cylindrical space with a big shaft at the center that can hide actors even as it allows for tantalizing glimpses of what's to come. And director Scott McKinsey makes entertaining use of it, for the most part. But McKinsey also wants us to see the island's old wizard, Prospero, as a workaholic daddy who's traumatized those in his care. The conceit comes across as petty and reductive and squanders the wonder generated by the setting. —Tony Adler
