The Terrible Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 21 2015

In playwright Morgan McNaught’s 70-minute fever dream, here presented by the New Colony, postdeath limbo is populated by three (and oddly, only three) souls: a depressed performance artist, a Depression-era songstress, and some guy. A tough-loving underworld shrink forces them to reenact their single worst moments, urging them to consider choices other than the ones that left them dead (or at least heartbroken). It’s a labored, murky stage work of unclear motivations, tenuous logic—how did the performance artist kill herself just by swinging from rubber straps?—and ever-shifting rules of engagement, all to drive home the rather obvious point that traumas must be faced before they can be overcome. Director Jesse Roth’s gung-ho cast give it their all, but sometimes their vocal hysterics render key passages indecipherable. —Justin Hayford
