The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls

Rated NR 84 minutes 2009

Like the Smothers Brothers in the U.S., sisters Jools and Lynda Topp became cultural icons in New Zealand by advancing left-wing politics through a mix of comedy and wholesome folk songs. This documentary celebrates their three-decade career but also provides a succinct lesson in New Zealand's recent political history, explaining how the movements for gay rights, Maori rights, and nuclear disarmament dovetailed in the 1980s. The Topps emerge as ideal spokespeople for all these causes: fun-loving and a little silly, they bring to their activism an inclusive spirit that's all but irresistible. Befitting her subjects, director Leanne Pooley maintains a joyful tone throughout.
