The Trip The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 14 2010

Chick lit hits the road in this dramedy by Crystal Rhodes, but rarely gets out of first gear. In act one, four African-American girlfriends drive one another nuts on a cross-country trip. In act two, set 20 years later, they reunite, make the drive again, and reconcile. A play set inside a moving car presents built-in challenges--limited blocking options and minimal eye contact among the players, for two--but Rhodes's script adds extra burdens, like clumsy, exposition-packed dialogue and a first act with little at stake. (That one character is an annoying, tooth-sucking bitch is about all there is until a last-minute revelation that seems tacked-on.) Act two is an improvement, and Kimm Beavers, as the quartet's cheeriest member, manages to shine throughout. --Dan Weissmann
