Greetings, and thanks for mentioning the stifled National Opinion Research Center report on Florida ballots [Hot Type, October 19]. It may be the case that the only way the public will see this information is if it is subpoenaed as part of a congressional investigation or as evidence in a legal dispute.
The news sources making up the consortium do, in fact, know that Gore is ahead in a big way in the analysis of those ballots. Republican operatives were sitting alongside the NORC staff, hollering and yelling about their characterizations as the work went along. And the RNC knows, because it has had those operatives present at all times.
You can be sure that if the information favored Bush, the RNC would have forced the partners to trumpet the news quite a long time ago.
