The Unprofessionals

I found no masterpieces among the videos from this group show available for preview, but several evidenced an interesting, TV-inflected weirdness bordering on nihilism. Jesse Hulcher's Jack renders the authority of teachers and bosses strangely artificial with its slow-paced tale of a young man whose drawings are criticized by his superiors. In the Halflifers' Actions in Action (1997), two guys clown around in a kitchen in a high-pitched hysteria reminiscent of a teenager's cable access show, but with an extra layer of self-parody. In Meg Knowles and Brian Milbrand's Christmas Pussy (2002) Knowles talks about her kitten. Though it's more home movie than performance art, the short's raw directness and kitty's strange behaviors are engaging. Approximately 75 min.
