The Van

This quiet, boring story, about two friends in north Dublin whose relationship gets rocky after they go into business together, almost seems smarmy because it presumes we'll be interested. Colm Meaney kills time golfing and hanging out at the pub until he rides the coattails of his best pal (Donal O'Kelly) to success operating a fish-and-chips van. This 1996 installment in novelist-screenwriter Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy—which includes The Snapper (1993), also directed by Stephen Frears, and The Commitments (1991)—has little to offer besides some exquisitely lit and composed images.
