The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites Agenda Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through June 1 2014

Small children are fascists when it comes to their favorite stories. Everything must be exactly the same every single time or there will be hell to pay. The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia understands this principle perfectly. In Gordon Pinsent's narration of this puppet show version of Eric Carle's Little Cloud, The Mixed-Up Chameleon, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, everything is reassuringly familiar: younger members of the "no shushing" audience happily joined in for key lines. The exquisitely painted animals and scenery, though, go beyond mere faithfulness to Carle's original illustrations, thanks to Kat McCormack and Simon Rainville's witty puppetry. They make the stories fun and interesting again, even to the older audience members, who have already been compelled to read them several thousand times. —Aimee Levitt
