The Violence of My Affection The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thu., June 9 and Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 3 2011

Sofonsiba Bellini is petulant, weepy, grandiose, paranoid, self-absorbed, and self-pitying. She stuffs multiple literary and mythological allusions into her incessant, circular speech and often breaks into Italian cabaret songs while her mute maid--invisible to everyone but her--helps her change clothes. Two minutes with her is plenty. But playwright/director Gaetano Marangelli leaves her onstage for the entire two hours of his debut play, where she alternately wallows in grief over her ex-husband's recent death, denies it ever happened, and relives uneventful moments with him that she insists left her abused and humiliated. By the end of the show, Sofonsiba has hardly progressed an inch. Despite compelling, honest performances, the torment adds up to very little. --Justin Hayford
