The Visit

Rated PG-13 94 minutes 2015

M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) teams up with low-budget horror producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) for a found-footage scare comedy, and the results are good fun. A teenage documentary maker and her younger brother travel to the countryside for a weeklong visit with their maternal grandparents, whom they've never met. The old folks seem friendly, but they're clearly harboring dark secrets; for reasons not explained, they prohibit the kids from leaving their bedroom after 9:30 PM, and Nana has a strange preoccupation with watching her granddaughter clean the oven. Shyamalan's nuanced characterization of the children feels authentic and provides an interesting contrast with his broadly comic treatment of the grandparents. His manipulation of tone is impressive—he gets you to laugh at the grandparents' strange behavior, only to shift gears into horror when you least expect it. With Kathryn Hahn, Peter McRobbie, and Olivia DeJonge.
