The Visitor

Rated R 108 minutes 2013

A U.S.-German coproduction written and directed by Italians, this 1979 cult item rips off so many different movies (The Omen, The Birds, The Holy Mountain) that ultimately it feels unique, communicating a cinephilia that shines through the awkward storytelling. A space alien (John Huston) who once fathered many earth children arrives in Atlanta to claim one of his descendants, a little girl with telekinetic powers. Giulio Paradisi directed under the pseudonym Michael J. Paradise; the cast includes Mel Ferrer, Lance Henriksen, Glenn Ford, Shelley Winters (overacting her heart out as the girl's nanny), and Sam Peckinpah (who seems to be channeling James Mason in Caught).
