The Waiting Game

A comedy about New York actors biding their time in the restaurant business is bound to strike a responsive chord in its cast, and the ensemble players in this 2000 debut feature by Ken Liotti seem intimately acquainted with a life whose ups and downs are marked by auditions and callbacks. Will Arnett plays a Jack Nicholson wannabe who confides in a feisty but vulnerable coworker (Terumi Matthews), and Liotti tracks the tortuous progress of their unexpected romance with grace and gentle humor. Michael Raynor is endearing as their stubbornly untalented friend, who has to throw a fit to get a role, though the film's minor characters tend to be sketchily drawn and the clunky editing often makes the film seem like a series of skits. 81 min.
