The War Zone

The grandeur of the Devon countryside in this ostensibly social-realist drama doesn't quite obscure its cliched notions about incest. The overwhelmingly dark imagery and the sound track dominated by rainstorms are certainly evocative, but the ultimately uncomplicated view of sexual and emotional violence in a family is only tragic, not insightful. Tim Roth directed a screenplay by Alexander Stuart, who adapted his own novel; with Ray Winstone, Lara Belmont, Freddie Cunliffe, and Tilda Swinton.
