The Wicker Man

Rated PG-13 102 minutes 2006

Robin Hardy's British drama The Wicker Man (1973) was pigeonholed as a horror movie but turned out to be a provocative fable about Christian sexual repression colliding with modern-day paganism. For this 2006 remake writer-director Neil LaBute has moved the action from Scotland to Washington State, added enough scares for Warner Brothers to market the movie as horror, and turned the story into an almost comically Wagnerian expression of the castration anxiety that snakes through his original screenplays (Your Friends & Neighbors, The Shape of Things). Nicolas Cage stars as the policeman who travels to a remote island in search of a missing girl and discovers an entrenched pagan subculture, this one governed by sinister new age feminist Ellen Burstyn. With Kate Beahan, Frances Conroy, Molly Parker, and Leelee Sobieski.
