The Wild Duck The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 14 2015

The secrets of two families—the wealthy Werles and the fallen-on-hard-times Ekdals—come to light when the moralistic Werle scion takes it upon himself to blow up the cherished illusions of his naive Ekdal counterpart. Henrik Ibsen’s 1884 drama is less gloomy and didactic than many of his other plays (not that the ending is happy by any means), but this Halcyon Theatre staging is for the most part deadly serious. The acting is wooden during the exposition, cloying in family scenes, and whiny at the climax. Director Tony Adams tries to spice things up now and then with anachronistic pop songs (“Norwegian Wood” is a nice nod to Ibsen’s homeland) and some of the most bizarrely gratuitous nudity I’ve ever seen. —Zac Thompson
