The Wild Party The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays. Continues through Oct. 2 2009

Joseph Moncure March's 1928 verse portrait of Jazz Age decadence and despair gets a cunning staging from Silent Theatre Company. Composer-pianist Isaiah Robinson sings and narrates while a fluid ensemble teases nuance out of intertwining cat-and-mouse games centered on a chorine named Queenie (Lady Jack)--equal parts pulchritude and pathos--who uses a handsome stranger to inflame the jealousy of her brutish lover Burrs (Dan Howard). Tonika Todorova's marvelous stage pictures, Tzvetana Dontcheva's lush costumes, Jennifer Larkin's hallucinatory lighting, and Robinson's adroit book and score combine to build a growing sense of doom over the show's well-paced 90 minutes. --Kerry Reid
