The Winter's Tale Free New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 21 2015

Sometimes it’s hard to know when you can safely label something a tragicomedy, but I’d say it’s an open-and-shut case here. William Shakespeare’s late-career play about jealous King Leontes and his long-lost daughter, Perdita, is a tragedy for three acts until it suddenly becomes a comedy in the last two. But in Fury Theatre’s outdoor staging (which I saw indoors 'cause it was rainy), this schizophrenic classic is one big muddle. The strategy of director Mark Dodge seems to be to barrel through both halves at top speed and maximum bluster, with the green cast paying little attention to making themselves understood and, when in doubt, mugging their faces off. Robbie Bersano’s Leontes, in particular, calls to mind an overcaffeinated auctioneer. —Zac Thompson
