The Winter's Tale | First Folio Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The Winter's Tale Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 9 2015

Despite the frosty title, Shakespeare’s exotic tale of romance, jealousy, forgiveness, and redemption is well suited for a summer production outdoors. Especially when it's staged with the theatrical magic codirectors Alison C. Vesely and her daughter, Hayley Rice, have conjured up for this First Folio Theatre production. Using a script shortened to a two-hour running time by Rice, the directors have tightly packed this hot-blooded, fast-paced show with terrific, inspired performers—led by Kevin McKillip (astonishing as the foolish King Leontes) and Diana Coates (radiant as the play’s moral center, Paulina)—all of them garbed in eye-pleasing costumes by Rachel Lambert and performing on Angela Weber Miller’s gorgeous set. Every moment crackles; the evening just flies by. —Jack Helbig

Price: $29-$39, $25-$35 students and seniors
