The Wizard of Oz The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 28 2011

Theatre-Hikes combines L. Frank Baum's classic fantasy with a walk through the woods, staging each scene in a different clearing. Elizabeth Fuller Chapman's stage adaptation predates the iconic 1939 film about Dorothy Gale, the Kansas farm girl who runs afoul of a wicked witch, so don't expect to hear "Over the Rainbow." That's just as well, though: game as they are, the cast couldn't compete with the likes of Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr. Still, their spirit and the setting's charm make up for otherwise pedestrian direction and choreography from Matthew Powell. You're on your own for water and sunscreen, but Theatre-Hikes provides seating mats and—on request—bug spray. —Dan Weissmann
