The World According to Shorts

Collected by Jonathan Howell and released through New Yorker Films, these international shorts are both polished and thematically ambitious, ranging from cool social satire (Hugo Maza's Chilean La Perra) to spectacular visual studies (Daniel Askill's Australian We Have Decided Not to Die). As usual with programs like these, one entry towers above the others, and in this case it's Andreas Hykade's German Ring of Fire (2000), a wide-screen black-and-white animation that looks like a cross between Day of the Dead art and Mad magazine's “Spy vs. Spy,” with some seriously disturbing vaginal imagery. Subtitled. 95 min.
