The World's Fastest Indian

Roger Donaldson has directed as many misses (The Getaway, The Recruit) as hits (Smash Palace, No Way Out), but this compelling fact-based story is his best effort in years. Anthony Hopkins gives a detailed, quirky performance as Burt Munro, a half-deaf New Zealander in his late 60s who's spent years refining his beloved 1920 Indian motorcycle in hopes of competing in the annual land-speed trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The story becomes especially engaging when Burt finally embarks on his journey, meeting all manner of humanity along the way and enduring a bad ticker and an enlarged prostate to compete in the race. With Diane Ladd and Annie Whittle. PG-13, 127 min.
