Cindy Lou Johnson's play begins with a bride assaulted by a curiously apologetic thief only hours before her wedding. Over the next 16 years, she and her family struggle to make sense of the events in their lives--the marriages, divorces, and funerals, which are likewise obstructed in ways that are often absurd as well as painful. Johnson has nothing but compassion for those who forge on despite life's unpredictability, but her A.R. Gurney universe repeatedly interrupted by Beth Henley chaos could easily give an audience whiplash. Under Michael D. Graham's direction, however, the actors in this Appetite Theatre production navigate the abrupt changes in tone with never a misstep, and their intensity gives immediacy and dignity to each scene, right up to the bittersweet resolution. Through 4/3: Thu-Sat 8:30 PM, Sun 3:30 PM. Raven Theatre, 6157 N. Clark, 773-275-1931. $12-$15.
