The Yellow Handkerchief

Rated PG-13 2010

William Hurt's considerable talents are wasted on this lugubrious road movie (2008), adapted from a Pete Hamill story that was also the basis for a 1977 Japanese feature. Hurt plays an ex-convict who hitches a ride through Louisiana with fragile teens Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Eddie Redmayne (Savage Grace). The moody girl welcomes the older man as a buffer between her and the awkward boy, whose romantic advances are more than a little creepy. Drawn to these fumbling kids, Hurt gradually opens up about his one great, tragic love (Maria Bello), but any catharsis is circumvented by his floundering costars and their risibly cornpone dialogue. Udayan Prasad directed. PG-13, 96 min.
